George Mitchell and the Boston Red Sox

It's really sad that we have to discuss steroids and the Mitchell Report after the hype around it seemed to die down, but unfortunately, our friends from the media refuse to let this topic go.  It's pretty sad to see the media cover this topic with an air of moral superiority.  These were the same people who relentlessly hyped up McGuilre and Sosa, but admitted steroid users , in 1998, yes ,the same people who now act like taking steroids is tantamount to murder.  The inconsistencies in their coverage of the matter was rather apparent, as well.  First, they say that the real problem is lying about taking steroids like Clemens allegedly did.  But then you have Andy Pettitte, who told the truth about all his HGH use, in the process straining a close friendship and revealing very private information about his father, and the media, like Jayson Stark at ESPN, Scott Miller here at CBS.sportsline and Ken Rosenthal at Fosxports continue to hound him as though he just committed some horrible act.  Hmm, I guess it really doesn't matter if you tell the truth or not then.

Then we have the fact that Mitchell was a Director for the Boston Red Sox and is still listed as one of their officers at the team's home page.  So was it coincidence that he mentioned no key contributors to the Red Sox' World Series titles but mentioned several contributors to the Yankees' titles?  This is a topic that has not been examined by the media.  They are prepared to accept Mitchell's word that his report was unbiased.  Furthermore, there has been no speculation as to whether or not those not mentioned by the Report took steroids.  People like the Giles brothers and Kenny Rogers, whose stats indicate a possible steroid use, are not hounded or pressed by the media in any way.  In fact, many persons on the report itself were basically let off free, such as Jack Cust, Miguel Tejada, Eric Gagne, and Paul Lo Duca.  You could make an argument that Clemens and Bonds are in a category of their own, given their incredible success as players.  But why has the media made such a point of badmouthing Andy Pettitte?  Is what he did worse than what Cust or Tejada did?  Does the fact that he sampled HGH twice to heal from an injury, and initially covered up the second usage to protect his ill father, as any decent son would do, make him an evil man?  According to the media and to George Mitchell, the answer is yes.  But can you really take any of this seriously, when Mitchell has a vested interest in seeing his Red Sox succeed and the rival Yankees fail, and ESPN + Co.'s adoption of the same stance is all but official?

It is a real shame that the media has taken such a biased stance with regard to this matter.  Before taking this holier than thou attitude with regard to several members of the Yankees organization, perhaps the media should step back and examine one of the other culprits in this whole steroid "debacle": itself.

George Mitchell and the Boston Red Sox

First I want to say that listening to anything ESPN has to say is like sticking your hand in a fire knowing it is going to hurt, it's just stupid. Yes they have a habit of beating stories to death, no doubt, but the steroids issue is a big deal relative to BASEBALL!! To compare that to serious problems like murder is ridiculous, keep it in perspective. You are allowed to be a defensive homer if you want to be but that really is a hit to your credibility. You sound like a whiny Yankees fan and why would anyone see it differently? Lastly, to believe anything that any of these players say about their steroid use is naive. They are all trying to hide the real truth so that their legacies and careers are not tarnished. Too bad they didn't consider this before they decided to cheat!

George Mitchell and the Boston Red Sox

George Mitchell's link to the Red Sox has been excused Haven't you heard he is an "honorable" man. Politicians never lie cheat or steal. Just ask Hillary Clinton, Elliot Spitzer, Tom Delay or many others. All that is needed to create a conflict of interest is the appearance of one. Bud Selig's appointment of Mitchell no matter how honest he might me was a mistake. A retired prosecutor would have made more sense.

Bud Selig has no credibility on the steroid issue. I have heard him say repeatedly he had no clue about how steroid usage in the 1990's. Why did David Cone state that testing was raised with the Players Assoc. during the 1994 season then? There were plenty of articles written during the summer of Sosa and McGwire about performance enhancing. The owners only cared about putting butts in the seats. What action has Selig taken against Peter McGowan, who the Mitchell report identified as having been told by the Giants team trainer of Greg Anderson and steroid usage in his clubhouse, and did nothing.

Selig is closing the barn after all the horses escaped. Even Mitchell stated that baseball should move forward on the issue and not look back on who did what and when. He also stated that he knows he didn't  find all the past users.

Of course the media will never accept any blame. If they make a mistake you know the retractions are always buried on page 79 or mentioned at the very end of a broadcast.

I am not defending anyone who cheated, even if under whatever rules baseball had in place at various times  it technically wasn't cheating. However there is a huge difference between taking HGH or steroids for months or years in an attempt to get stronger than those who took a few doses attempting to recover from injury.

George Mitchell and the Boston Red Sox

Mitchell was one of the most partisan senate leaders this country ever had. To call him honorable and unbiasedis like saying Stalin didn't send his enemies to Siberia, it's just not true.

Don't forget, Mitchell only had sources from a few teams.  So that could explain the lack of names from the Red Sox, yes he has/had an affiliation with the Sox, but not all people will co-opperate!
